LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Jefferson County Coroner's office has identified the man who killed himself after shooting his wife in their room at a senior living facility on Saturday.

Leon Smith, 96, died at University of Louisville of a gunshot wound at 7:50 p.m. on March 28, according to Deputy Coroner David Wood.

Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said earlier that his wife had injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

The shooting was reported at Elmcroft Senior Living, located at 10201 Valley Farms Blvd, just before 5:30 p.m., according to MetroSafe. The facility is off Dixie Highway near Valley High School.

The couple were residents of the facility, Smiley said. The shooting occurred in their room.

David Grady, a vice president for Elmcroft Senior Living, released the following statement on the incident:

Elmcroft of Valley Farms, a residential assisted living community, continues to cooperate with the authorities. The safety and privacy of our residents and associates is our priority. Elmcroft of Valley Farms continues to take care of its residents today, while our heart goes out to the affected family for their loss and for our associates who are working diligently through this event.

Out of respect for everyone, we will have no further comment.

No one else was injured in the shooting. The domestic violence unit of the Louisville Metro Police Department is investigating.
