LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - An officer with the home incarceration program and the man he shot on Thursday have both been identified by the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

The LMDC said in a release that Officer John Hagan with the department's HIP program shot Michael Anthony Thornton, 30, while trying to take him into custody.

The department said Thornton turned his vehicle in an aggressive manner toward Officer Hagan, who was on foot along with an officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department's Flex Unit. Officer Hagan opened fire, hitting Thornton and a front seat passenger, police said on Thursday.

Police did not identify the passenger because no charges were filed against that person.

Thornton and the passenger had injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to police. A third person in the back seat was uninjured, police said, and the officers were not hurt.

The officers were attempting to take Thornton into custody on charges of escape, tampering with a prisoner monitoring device and theft. The shooting occurred in the 2200 block of Brownsboro Road, near a Kroger store.

The corrections department said Officer Hagan is a 14-year veteran. He has been placed on paid administrative leave by Corrections Director Mark Bolton as the Public Integrity Unit of LMPD investigates.

Thornton is currently being held at the Department of Corrections. Additional charges are pending.
