3 charged with Derby night murder, victim was Derby visitor

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Three people have been arrested in connection to a murder police say happened during an attempted robbery Derby weekend.

Louisville Metro police detectives arrested Tyrone Thomas, 19, Fahed B. Abu-Diab, 18, and Fatima Abu-Diab, 20, all of Louisville on May 3.

Arrest reports say the three were committing strong-arm robberies on May 1 and 2, Oaks Day and Derby Day, in the vicinity of several hotels and apartment complexes throughout Louisville. Around 11:10 p.m. on May 2, police say the three were committing a robbery of two people in the 700 block of Phillips Lane when Thomas fired multiple times striking one of the victims. Scott Hunter, 49, of Toronto, Canada died from multiple gunshot wounds.

At the time he was killed Hunter was visiting Louisville with a friend. The men had attended the Kentucky Derby.

Commander of the LMPD Homicide Unit Lt. Todd Kessinger, said the victims were walking along Phillips Lane returning to their hotel room and the three suspects saw them as they drove by. Kessinger said the suspects stopped the car, approached the men and attempted to rob them. During the robbery, Kessinger said a struggle ensued and shots were fired.

Hunter, was a bartender at the House on Parliament in Toronto and an owner of a coffee shop called Grinder Coffee.

Thomas is charged with murder and 12 counts and robbery. Fahed Abu-Diab and Fatima Abu-Diab are each charged with one count of murder and 12 counts of robbery. In addition, Fahed and Fatima Abu-Diab are each facing drug charges.

Kessinger said Fahed and Fatima Abu-Diab are brother and sister. Thomas is the boyfriend of Fatima Abu-Diab.

All three are being held at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. They are scheduled to be arraigned on May 5.

Following the arrests, LMPD said they received a tip from someone with very details knowledge about the case. Police are hoping that person will come forward and speak to them.

Police say Fahed Abu-Diab was also involved in what was ruled justifiable homicide back in February of Anthony Smith Jr., a Western High School teen.
