Prosecutor punished over letter referring to 'greedy foreigners'
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - An Assistant Jefferson County Attorney has been given a written reprimand and ordered to attend sensitivity training after making racially insensitive remarks in the context of his private practice.
In the letter of reprimand to Karl Price, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell wrote, "...you are well aware that your conduct in your private practice can have a direct effect on your roles and responsibilities as an Assistant Jefferson County Attorney."
In a letter dated May 22, 2015 to his opposing counsel in a civil case, Price labeled the attorney's clients, who are Asian, "greedy foreigners who simply did not understand simple contractual relations," and who relied "on some ancient Asian principle I suppose."
The letter Price wrote first surfaced on the Facebook page for The Kentucky Trial Court Review and appears on the letterhead of Price's private firm.
O'Connell, who referred to Price's statements as "discriminatory" wrote, "You have served admirably and with integrity as an Assistant Jefferson County Attorney for 25 years. However, I cannot ignore your behavior in this instance." O'Connell went on to issue the punishments against Price.
The County Attorney's office prosecutes misdemeanors, violations and juvenile cases. Felony cases are handled by the Commonwealth's Attorney. The County Attorney's office employs about 90 prosecutors, according to the metro government website.
