Jeffboat employee found dead at workplace

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - Authorities are investigating the death of man whose body was found at a southern Indiana shipyard.

Clark County Coroner Terry Conway said the victim, Sergio Torriente, 40, of Louisville, KY, was found near the keel section of a barge under construction around 8:45 a.m. by other employees. Torriente was taken to Clark Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The company released the following statement about the death of Torriente:

"One of our Jeffboat teammates, Sergio Torriente, was found unresponsive in the shipyard early this morning during his regular shift. When his coworkers found him, first responders immediately provided medical attention until he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. We have just heard from the hospital that he has passed away. The cause of death is unknown at this time. We are investigating, but we are not aware of any unusual circumstances. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

An autopsy will be performed at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville.
