Man dies after shooting himself at Bell County courthouse

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - One person has died after a shooting this morning at a courthouse in southeastern Kentucky.

According to NBC affiliate WLEX, the shooting happened around 10:50 a.m. at the Farmer Helton Judicial Building located in Pineville, KY.

According to Kentucky State Police, Erik Barnett, 25, of Pineville, had been taken into custody after appearing at a court hearing because he failed to meet requirements sent down by the court.

While in an elevator with a bailiff, KSP said Barnett managed to wrestle the bailiff's gun away from him and turned the weapon on himself. Barnett, who had been initially charged with possession, died from his injuries.
