LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A newly FDA-approved procedure promises to shave inches off of your midsection without going under the knife.

If you know the frustration of going to the gym and not getting the results you're hoping for, then this relatively new procedure may be of interest.

If you're willing to pay up, you could lose inches off of your waistline without ever moving a muscle.

The technology is branded as Vanquish, a machine that uses radio frequency waves (similar to microwaves) to heat pockets off fat, breaking it down into bits that the body can then absorb and get rid of.

"Making people look better without surgery, without anything that's invasive" is the hot new trend, said Dr. Marc Salzman. "We're usually seeing somewhere in the one-to-three inch reduction if you measure with a tape going all the way around."

It may sound too good to be true, but the FDA recently approved the technology for fat reduction - meaning the machine has been tested and proven to deliver results.

Dr. Salzman said each treatment usually lasts about 45 minutes.

The panels of the machine are placed over the patient's stomach as heat is applied (without touching the skin) at about 120 degrees.

Salzman said 50% to 60% of fat cells die after ten days of treatment and when paired with another treatment that uses sound wave technology, the procedure is even more effective.

Patients report little to no pain when undergoing the procedure - most describe it as a warm heating bad.

"I mean it's amazing to be able to lie there and lose inches and not do anything," said Kim Pickard, one of Salzman's technicians who underwent the procedure.

While the machine is intended for fat reduction - not weight loss - many patients report losing weight along with the inches.

Salzman said those who are moderately overweight generally see the best results.

For some patients Vanquish replaces liposuction or a tummy tuck.

It's more appealing because it does not require anesthesia and there's no recovery time.

The treatments are recommended in a series of four procedures, spaced over a four to five month period.

A package of four procedures costs around $2400 at Salzman Cosmetic Surgery and Spa.

As far as side effects, some patients reported the area where they received treatment to swell or become red, but doctors say that usually disappears in an hour or two.
