LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man was attacked and robbed in a Portland neighborhood early Saturday morning. Now, police are searching for his attackers.

Police were called to N. 23rd Street around 4 a.m. Saturday and found a man stumbling.

According to surveillance video, the man was walking with a cane on N. 23rd Street when a group of young people approached him from behind. The group pushed the man to the ground, then punched and kicked him multiple times, leaving him lying in the street.

"I just kept saying to myself, please God don't let them kill him," said an eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous.

She heard screaming and looked out of her front window to find two males and one female standing over the man.

"They were hitting him, kicking him, then reached into his pockets and removed some stuff," the witness said.

The neighbor described the attackers as, "young, at least 16, maybe 16 to 18 years old".

The beating didn't end there, though. The man was then whipped in the face with a shirt.

"They were jumping up and down and appeared they were laughing," the neighbor said. "They just had no regard at all."

Nearly 2 minutes into the robbery, the group fled on foot.

The man's first attempt to stand up, ended with him falling on the front of a neighbor's vehicle.

"There is blood all over the front of the vehicle," the neighbor said. "He managed to get up the street, but he fell several times."

Now this neighbor is concerned for the rest of her community because, she said, a few of her neighbors are restricted to wheelchairs.

"We were up all night, we feel very unsafe now," she said.

According to police, the victim was transported to University Hospital with injuries that don't appear to be life threatening. He was treated for a cut on his head.
