LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A top U.S. safety official is calling for seat belts in school buses.

In a speech Monday, the head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mark Rosekind, said data shows safety belts on buses would reduce injuries and save lives.

Rosekind says the agency will use every tool at its disposal to get three-point seat belts in all of the nation's school buses and will launch a series of steps including new research, funding and a nationwide mandate.

Rosekind admitted the push for seat belts is a change in position for the NHTSA.
