BOWLING GREEN, KY (WAVE) - A state representative from Western Kentucky is calling for better safety measures on school buses.

Rep. Jim DeCesare (R-Bowling Green/District 17) has filed a bill that would provide more training for drivers and materials to raise awareness of the danger with young students.

The bill comes after a kindergartener in Butler County was killed. The 5-year-old was hit by the bus as it pulled away, right after dropping him off at his grandmother's house.

"It made us open our eyes to see if there is more that could be done, and we think there is," said DeCesare. "So, I've talked with the Butler County superintendent about this piece of legislation. I talked to all the interested parties that would be affected by the impact of a resolution like this. So, everybody is on board."

The bill will be considered when lawmakers head back to work in early January.
