LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville contest could win shoppers a $1,000 shopping spree if they buy local.

Mayor Greg Fischer and the Louisville Independent Business Alliance announced on Saturday their 8th annual "Buy Local, Win $1000: hoLOUdays Contest" in celebration of Small Business Saturday.

LIBA, an alliance of over 750 locally owned and independent businesses, says it hopes to encourage shoppers to choose local businesses over national chains in order to build a stronger economy and create jobs in the community.

A recent study of Louisville-area business shows that for every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $55 is reinvested locally. Only $14 is reinvested from national chains.

To enter the contest, shoppers can collect a receipt from five LIBA-member businesses and submit them by mail, text, email, online or in person at either Feeders Supply or Heine Brothers' Coffee by Jan. 5.

The winner of the contest will win a $1,000 shopping spree to any LIBA-member business.

Full contest details and a list of participating business can be found here.

LIBA business members will celebrate Small Business Saturday by chalking the sidewalks with #hoLOUdays and other Buy Local messages on their sidewalks.
