LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - In it's seventh year, Big Momma's Soul Kitchen is worried they may not be able to keep up their annual tradition of free Christmas dinner for hundreds in Louisville.
In Big Momma's kitchen, Big Momma is queen.
Just before 9 a.m. Sunday morning and she's already hard at work putting the finishing touches on her big Sunday dinner.
The spread: meatloaf, green beans, homemade yams, stuffed chicken, fried chicken, smothered pork chops, ham, cornbread - and that's just the main course.
On Christmas Day, all of that food will be on the menu - for free.
"We don't have a lot here, but what we do have we're willing to share," said Sheryl Fox, Big Momma's daughter and manager of the family restaurant.
Sharing is truly caring at Big Momma's. They serve free dinners on Christmas Day for everyone who shows up. Last year more than 1,000 people lined the block at 45th and West Broadway for a free meal. This year they're expecting 1,400.
Why does she do it?
Big Momma tells us she's from a big family, one of 13 to be exact, so she knows what it means for times to be hard.
Big Momma's restaurant has been open for a dozen years, and this year will be the seventh year of the dinner giveaway.
Despite the growing popularity, donations are falling short.
"We're just trying to make sure we get donations to be able to feed everyone that comes thru the door," Fox said.
Big Momma says turning someone away just isn't an option -- she'll pay out of her own pocket if she has to. She's hoping it doesn't come to that, though.
"We want to help her out so she doesn't take everything that she has," said Fox, "regardless, she's going to make it work. She always does."
Big Momma's Soul Kitchen is accepting donations up until Christmas Day.
Canned goods are appreciated, but monetary donations are best so they can purchase food and supplies in bulk to make sure everyone who wants a free, hot meal on Christmas Day can get one.
Big Momma's is located at 4532 West Broadway - directly across from Shawnee Park.
The free Christmas dinner runs from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Day.
Big Momma's is also looking for volunteers to help serve the meal.
