LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Whatever Louisville City FC was planning for an encore in its second season, it will have to happen without star forward Matt Fondy.
The USL's Most Valuable Player a year ago, Fondy will play for Jacksonville Armada FC in 2016.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but according to the announcement on Louisville City FC's website, the transfer fee was record-breaking.
"It was a tremendous year for me in Louisville," said Fondy, whose 22 goals last year were a USL single-season record. "The support from the supporters and supporter groups, the city, coaching staff and my teammates really made Louisville feel like home. It was the most intimate and tightly knit environment I have been a part of in my career, and I will be very sad to not be able to play in purple at Slugger Field."
Fondy, 27, also won the league's Golden Boot award as the USL's top player last season, when he led City FC to the Eastern Conference final in the team's inaugural season.
"I cannot thank everyone enough for all the unforgettable moments," he said.
Added City FC Coach James O'Connor: "For us to have been able to help with Matt's development, that was a real treat. We did well last year and enjoyed watching him work. To see him and his accomplishments was amazing, but that's always going to garner a lot of attention."
