Theft ring busted, more than $100K stolen from local stores

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - At least nine people are suspected in a shoplifting ring responsible for stealing more than $100,000 in merchandise from various stores in Louisville.

Derek Sines and his wife, Esperanza Sines, were arrested on Saturday at a location on Preston Highway.

Arrest reports for the couple state they stole items from stores including Home Depot, Sephora, Target and several others, and then returned the items for gift cards. The gift cards were sold to pawn shops for cash. The alleged thefts happened between November 2013 and February 2016.

Police said Derek Sines sold nearly 600 gift cards worth $88,500 and Esperanza Sines sold 70 gift cards worth $13,900.

The Sineses gave statements to investigators admitting their involvement in the thefts, then continued to commit the crimes, according to police.

At least seven other people are suspected to be involved in the theft ring. They have not yet been identified.
