LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's not often robberies end this way. Police said a man was shot by the person he was targeting. Now, surveillance video obtained by WAVE 3 News shows the moments leading up to the shooting and what transpired after.

It all happened Jan. 26 inside of a busy parking garage at 425 South 5th Street. The garage is used by many people who work downtown or Fourth Street Live! visitors.

For the victim, a routine day after work turned out to be terrifying. Around 6:15 p.m. she got into an elevator at the parking garage and a man police identified as John Ganobcik, 27, followed.

She got off at the sixth floor, so did he.

The video does not show what happened after that, but the woman told police she ran to her car and Ganobcik chased her then began assaulting her as she tried to get into her car. The victim told police Ganobcik pulled a knife and tried to push her into the passenger seat of the car, she was able to reach her gun.

She said the gun did not fire the first time. She pulled the trigger and Ganobcik punched her in the face and attempted to stab her with the knife. The gun fired the second time wounding Ganobcik as he tried to run from the garage with his neck bleeding.

Another man noticed Ganobcik as he ran past him and followed. They walked into the PNC Plaza at Fifth and Jefferson Streets and the man called 911.

"This gentleman has been shot I'm calling 911,"the man said.

"Are you right there with him now," questioned the dispatcher.

"I'm here with him now," the man said.

Ganobcik does have a criminal history and was on probation when the incident happened. He is now facing a number of charges including attempted murder, robbery and wanton endangerment.
