Teen shot in hunting accident

FLOYD COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - A teenage girl is recovering after being accidentally shot during a hunting trip.

Deputies were called to the 6200 block of State Road 62 at 11:17 a.m. on Sunday. They found Alysee Defee, 13, shot in the armpit. She was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville; her condition is being called stable.

Investigators said Defee had been hunting with Charles Ringo. The two were loading their equipment in a truck when a shotgun accidentally when off, hitting Defee.

Floyd County Sheriff Frank Loop is reminding the public about the importance of gun safety. Here are a few tips he offered:

  • Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
  • Keep the gun unloaded until ready to use
