LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Dozens of University of Louisville medical students who ran the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon or miniMarathon made a stop by Kosair Charities on Saturday to pass along their race medals.
The patients at the Clinical and Translational Research Center are fighting cancer and blood diseases.
They are "running buddies" with students from UofL's Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation.
"This is my third year doing this. I've kept the same patient for the three years, so I get to develop a relationship with her an her family and I learn what they deal with on a day to day basis," Samantha Heidrich said.
People all over the world participate in Medals4Mettle, but the UofL program is unique because of its opportunity to build those relationships.
