LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A thief was caught on camera taking a package off of a front porch in Okolona.

"It was a present for my mom for Mother's Day but it wasn't something overly expensive or that couldn't be replaced," Sarah Mattingly said.

Luckily, Mattingly had taken precautions. A few months prior she installed a security system in her home.

The security camera was in plain sight, but still a thief snatched her package right off her porch shortly after Mattingly had gotten an alert from Amazon that said her package had been delivered.

"The police officer that helped me said people are following FedEx and UPS trucks just to take peoples packages," Mattingly said.

Retired FBI agent and security expert David Byer said this type of technology is helpful in catching thieves along with being aware of your neighborhood's surroundings.

"Burglars like to have a place they can seclude themselves before they go into a home," Byer said. "Often times they'll case a neighborhood, so again if you see someone who is driving around don't hesitate to call the police and get a license plate number."

Byer advised people to trim their landscaping to make sure possible thieves cannot hide around their property. He also said to install plenty of lighting or motion detector lights around their home, camera systems that connect to your smart phone or even a dog.

Byer said neighbors should connect with each other so they are alerted to trouble in their neighborhood.

"Always be aware of what's going on around you and be aware so you can anticipate things" Byer said.

Mattingly said with the thefts hitting Okolona, she decided to share her video in hopes the thief will get caught.

"My package was small but someone else's could be super important or something that can't be replaced," Mattingly said.

Louisville Metro Police's crime bulletin for the 7th Division said the area has been hit with at least 12 reported burglaries, three stolen cars, four auto-thefts and two robberies from May 1 to May 7.
