LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Dog owners now have a new spot in southwest Louisville to take their pets to run and play.

After years of planning, Waverly Park Dog Run officially opened on Monday.

Louisville Metro Council President David Yates said the dog run is a great addition to Waverly Park because it allows owners to have fun with their pets in a place where dogs can be off their leashes and play with other dogs.

The dog run is one-and-a-half acres located at the end of Waverly Park Road.

Waverly Park Dog Run is now one of eight dog parks opened by the Louisville Dog Run Association.

"The goal of our Metro Parks system is to offer a wide variety of scenic beauty, recreation and natural places for the people of Metro Louisville," Yates said. "This new Dog Run is yet another way we can help people enjoy our parks and I encourage pet owners to come out and learn more about it."

Yates partnered with the LDRA and Metro Parks in 2013 to plan and find funding for the dog run.

The LDRA is a volunteer organization dedicated to running dog parks in Louisville. All dog parks owned by the LDRA are for members only. Members pay an annual fee that goes to maintain and build the parks.
