WAVE 3 News Editorial - May 19, 2016: Summer Learning

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - As graduation season begins and much needed summer breaks begin, realize summer also represents opportunities to continue learning. Falling behind on the academic advancement made this school year is not something that needs to happen.

Encourage your children to read more this summer. Summer learning loss of more than two months of grade level equivalency in reading and math occurs for some students because they don't open a book all summer. The opposite can happen if you do: higher achievement the following school year.

We have great libraries in our communities. Visit them and check out books and take part in their learning programs. Our region boasts terrific cultural enrichment opportunities and some are free. Take advantage of them. We should celebrate learning more.
