Metro Correction inmate escapes from custody

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - An inmate escaped from the Louisville Metro Corrections on Thursday morning, and police have yet to take him into custody.

According to a news release from Metro Corrections, Smith Edward Vance Jr., 37, walked away from a kitchen work detail. He was at an exterior dumpster when he left the site on foot.

Vance originally was booked into custody on April 22 on charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

"Metro Corrections Director Mark Bolton has ordered an internal investigation into the circumstances that contributed to inmate Smith's unauthorized departure," Assistant Director Steve Durham said.

Corrections officers are coordinating search efforts with the Louisville Metro Police Department.
