LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A self-defense studio in Louisville is one of the only places in Kentucky that teaches active killer training.
River City Self Defense, located in Distillery Commons, is certified in active killer training, which combines unarmed training, armed training and trauma care.
"It's really the first time that these three have all been combined," Owner Jesse Walker said, "we're all working to make sure this gets out as quickly as possible."
Walker and River City Self Defense co-owner Mindy Golde said it's training that works and they're working nonstop to make sure as many people are trained as possible.
"Once you're in a bad situation and it's happening. You've only got what you came in with," Walker said.
Walker said the active killer training focuses on fighting someone with a weapon and also without.
"If we have an active shooter firing off into the crowd the first thing we need to do is redirect the line of fire," Walker said.
The third part to active killer training, Walker said, is often overlooked.
"One of the biggest problems with these events is people often die, not immediately, but waiting for help to arrive so training with trauma care and, not to be too blunt, but keeping blood in the body with a tourniquet or wound packing," Walker said.
Members of the class say it's training they hope they never use but always keep in mind. And a fringe benefit? A dose of confidence.
"It's a huge boost in confidence. You don't even realize it you come in and you're working on a move set and you come back three weeks later and see what you can do," Dawn Bruneau said.
On Aug. 6, River City Self Defense will offer an 8 hour long active killer training. For more information, click here.
