LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – An African tortoise who has become a staple in downtown Louisville is being treated for injuries he suffered when he was hit by a vehicle.
Spike, a 125 pound tortoise, was hit in the parking lot of Wayside Christian Mission on Jefferson Street around 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to Wayside Christian Mission Director Nina Mosely.
Mosely said the driver told police they thought they hit a rock.
Spike's shell was damaged and he was taken to Shively Animal Clinic for treatment.
Spike became Wayside's unofficial mascot after Moseley and her husband realized their son's turtle was getting too big for his aquarium.
Spike and his handler, William Duncan, have become well known downtown thanks to the 10 block walks they take at least twice a week.
Moseley said Duncan was not injured.
