Indiana man dies during deputy chase

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - A man died while running from deputies in Columbus, IN on Monday night.

Deputies from the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office got a call about a suspicious vehicle on North County Road 250 at about 8:30 p.m.

Deputies began following a white 1996 Doge van in the area. The van stopped suddenly and a man riding the backseat got out and ran. He was later identified as Robert Quick, 44, of Edinburg, IN.

While trying to get away from deputies, Quick swam across the Driftwood River. After reaching the other side, Quick collapsed, according to the Sheriff's Office.

By the time a deputy made it across the river, Quick was unresponsive. He was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Robert Quick's cause of death has not yet been determined.

Indiana State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Quick's death.

The Sheriff's Office learned Quick had outstanding warrants in Bartholomew and Johnson Counties.
