LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A young girl died after she was hit by a vehicle Thursday evening.

The 5-year-old child was hit near the intersection of Southside Drive and Tenny Avenue around 7:30 p.m., according to Louisville Metro Police Department spokeswoman Alicia Smiley.

Police said the girl's uncle was driving the car. He went to move the parked car and saw children playing front of him, but not the young girl behind him, and accidentally ran over her, according to police.

A police escort was used to transport the child to Kosair Children's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Before first responders arrived, neighbors tried to help.

Jason Doss lives across the street from the accident and raced over when his daughter told him what happened.

"They brought the baby inside," Doss said. "I go over there and the baby was laid out unconscious."

A six-year Army vet, Doss tried to save the child's life.

"I just started compressions, chest compressions, trying to keep the blood flowing," Doss said. "I just had to do it. I knew what to do and I didn't think about it."

Neighbors, including Doss, said they were shocked and sadden over the tragic accident.

"Most of these people around here have small children and it kind of tears the whole neighborhood up when something like that happens," said Kevin Mullaney, who lives nearby.

Police said they do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved and are not expecting any charges in the case.

The name of the child has not been released.
