SHELBYVILLE, KY (WAVE) – While democrats are the focus of America this week, Incumbent Republican Senator Rand Paul is weighing in on the heated race from WAVE Country.

Paul visited Stratton Community Center as a stop on his United States Senate campaign trail on Wednesday.

Paul believes Trump is on the right track to win the Bluegrass state, because of his push on a complex natural resource.

"I think in Kentucky, one of the important issues is are you for us or are you against us?," Paul said. "Hillary Clinton has said she will put our coal miners out of business and I think the fact that Trump has said he would try to repeal the anti-coal regulations is a huge step forward for him."

Paul signed the pledge to support the Republican nominee and he stands by that pledge.

"I think the fact that Donald Trump is promoting lower taxes and less regulation, particularly that he's spoken out on the issue of coal, which has been devastating to our state, I think he is on the right side," Paul said.

A head-to-head battle between Trump and Clinton has some saying there's no better candidate.

"I am not positive what will happen," Paul said. "I can tell you what my vision is for the Republican party, I want it to be bigger and more inclusive."

Paul, who made it a point to engage with minority communities during his campaigns, believes they are becoming more receptive to Republicans.

"Always proud of the fact that our rallies are starting to show people from different walks of life," Paul said. "Business owners, as well as working class, white, black, rich, poor, we really are trying to open up the party and I think we've had some success and I hope we continue building on that."

As for Trump's ability to succeed, Paul said he thinks the Republican presidential nominee will be picked overwhelmingly by Kentucky. When asked if he would be running for President in 2020, Paul gave no specific response. He said his only focus in on the election happening this November.

His strategy during his U.S. Senate campaign, against Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, is to keep pushing for balanced budgets, lower taxes and end the war on coal.

"When I tell folks I would rather spend the money at home, rather than spend it on foreign aid in Pakistan, I think a lot of people will be with me on that," Paul said.
