SEYMOUR, IN (WAVE) - A Seymour police officer shot an 80-year-old man who allegedly raised a rifle toward officers early Tuesday morning.

Indiana State Police (ISP) said the incident began when officers with the Seymour Police Department were called to the 1500 block of Westgate Road shortly after 1 a.m. on a report of a man inside the home who was acting erratically. The man, identified as Alvin Otte, was in possession of a gun and a knife and may have fired the gun inside the home, according to an ISP news release.

Multiple Seymour officers arrived on the scene and heard additional shots coming from inside the home where Otte was believed to be alone. He then exited through the front door of the house and raised the rifle in the direction of police, ISP said.

Officer Michael Payne, a five-year veteran of the department, fired at least one shot, hitting Otte in the arm and causing him to put down the weapon.

Ott was taken into custody, and officers immediately began administering first aid. EMS personnel were called to the scene.

Otte was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He was treated and released before being held for a mental evaluation.

Payne will be placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation is conducted. The action is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
