KUTTAWA, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville woman was killed in two-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon in Lyon County.
Mary D. Fugate, 72 of Louisville, died in the wreck when the vehicle she was a passenger in apparently tried to make a U-turn on Interstate-24.
The Kentucky State Police Post 1 in Mayfield received a 911 call at 1:56 p.m. Saturday reporting a collision at the 37-mile marker on I-24 near Kuttawa. According to the KSP, the preliminary investigation shows that Leslie D. Cunningham, 71 of Evansville, Ind. was operating a 2015 Subaru WRX westbound in the right-hand lane of I-24. Meanwhile Joseph M. Mouser, 73 of Rineyville, was operating a 2007 Ford F150 westbound in the left-hand lane beside Cunningham. Cunningham then turned left into the path of Mouser's F150 in what "appears to be an attempt to make a U-turn across Interstate 24," according to a release from the KSP.
Mouser then struck the Subaru on the driver's side.
Fugate, who was a passenger in Cunningham's vehicle, sustained multiple blunt-force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lyon County Coroner. Cunningham was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville with non-life threatening injuries.
Mouser sustained minor abrasions.
The investigation and collision reconstruction is continuing.
