Internet addiction linked to mental health problems

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – If you're buried in your phone right now, or you've spent far too much time on the computer, you may want to think twice about your internet usage. It could lead to mental health problems.

Canadian researchers surveyed about 250 college students about their internet use, using the internet addiction test developed in 1998.

Thirty-three of those students met the criteria for internet addiction, while 107 of them were classified as having problematic internet use.

According to the study, most of those addicted to the internet had trouble controlling how much they streamed video, visited social media sites and messaged other people.

Researchers found those who were addicted struggled with daily tasks at school and work. They also had higher rates of depression, anxiety, and impulsiveness. Other issues included problems with planning and time management.
