LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A loaded handgun was found in the possession of a 16-year-old freshman at Atherton High School Tuesday morning.
According to a letter sent home to parents, a student told school leaders that another student may have had a handgun at school. The school resource officer immediately approached the student, conducted a search and found the loaded gun on his person. The weapon was confiscated, and the student was arrested.
"I want to emphasize how important it is for our students to continue to report any rumors or conversations they may hear about threatening behavior at our school," Principal Richard Guetig said in the letter. "We must all be vigilant to ensure the safety and security of our campus for all students and staff."
At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Jefferson County Public Schools released more information, saying the student did not take the gun to school to harm anyone. The gun was a .38 caliber pistol. Atherton High School was not locked down during the incident.
