SALEM, IN (WAVE) - A historic southern Indiana church was destroyed by fire early Monday morning.

Chief Tom Day of the Salem Fire Department said firefighters were called to Highland Baptist Church at 3572 North Nubian Road in Salem at 3:20 a.m.

Day said the county assessment card says the church was built in 1900, but he believes it may have been even older.

Day estimated firefighters used 20,000 to 25,000 gallons of water on the fire. They cleared the scene at 10:30 a.m., but it continued to smolder. They planned to return to the site to check on it later in the day.

Services were held at the church on Sunday.

Day said any time a church burns, it must be reported to the fire marshal. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
