Early LIHEAP registration for 60+, disabled persons begins Oct. 3

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Need help paying your winter heating bills? If so, Monday, Oct. 3 marks the day the Louisville Metro Department of Community Services will begin accepting pre-registration heating assistance applications.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides financial assistance to eligible persons who have trouble paying their utility bills.

Pre-registration is for the following Jefferson County residents:

  • Those on a fixed income within 130 percent of the federal poverty level.
  • Those who are 60 years of age or older or disabled and receive Social Security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits.

Applicants must provide the following documentation:

  • Proof of all household income for the preceding month (food stamp award letter, Social Security award letter, pay stubs, etc. or proof of $0 income. Note: Zero Income forms are available at the Community Services office at 701 W. Ormsby Ave., Suite 201 or by clicking here.
  • Proof of Social Security number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
  • Most current heating bill; or statement from your landlord if heating expenses are included in your rent; or statement from your utility company if you participate in a pre-pay electric program. Please bring the account number and name on the account for all heating fuel sources and electric.

People who meet the early registration requirements may apply at the following locations between the hours of 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. No appointment is necessary for this early registration phase; eligible individuals can choose the most convenient site.

  • Tuesday, Oct. 4: Southwick Community Center, 3621 Southern Ave.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 5: Portland Community Center, 640 North 27th St.
  • Thursday., Oct. 6: Parkhill Community Center, 1703 South 13th St.
  • Friday, Oct. 7: Watson-Powell Community Center, 1340 Heafer Rd.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 11: South Louisville Community Center, 2911 Taylor Blvd.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 12: Jeffersontown Community Center, 10617 Taylorsville Rd.
  • Monday, Oct. 17: Baxter Community Center, 1125 Cedar Ct.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 18: Allgeier Community Center, 4104 Cadillac Ct.
  • Monday, Oct.24: Sun Valley Community Center, 6505 Bethany Ln.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 25: Shawnee Arts & Cultural Center, 607 S. 37th St.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 26: Oak & Acorn, 631 South 28th St.
  • Thursday, Oct. 27: California Community Center, 1600 West St. Catherine St.
  • Friday., Oct. 28: Beechmont Community Center, 205 West Wellington Ave.

Funds for this program will be posted on or after Nov. 1, 2016.

Income-eligible residents who don't meet the requirements for pre-registration (who are not elderly or disabled) may still apply for LIHEAP benefits beginning Nov. 1.  Appointments will be taken in advance in mid-to-late October utilizing a new phone and on-line appointment system. Individuals who are unable to apply for this program in person may send a representative on their behalf. Simply provide the representative with a hand-written note, dated and signed from the applicant, giving them permission to handle the application for services. The representative will need to provide the required documentation listed above for the applicant to apply for assistance.
