Local families scrambling to fix vacation plans wrecked by Matthew

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – As Hurricane Matthew heads through the Caribbean and into Florida, travelers are scrambling to change plans.

Cruises and nearly 4,000 flights are canceled, and Thursday Disney World announced it's closing for the first time in more than a decade.
With Jefferson County Public School families returning from fall break and many other school districts just starting theirs, the impact in Florida is making a strong impact locally.
Lydia Rosebush has two children and was a set to head to Disney World when the resort announced the closure.
"I might've said a lot of bad words," Rosebush said.

She was able to change her flight online, but her Disney hold time was two and a half hours.
"I called and it took several times just to get through," Rosebush said. "It kept saying, 'this is a recording; all circuits are busy.'"
Mark Bliss owns Bliss Travel in New Albany, which is dealing with both school families and honeymooners.
"It's just a mess," Bliss said. "I didn't get home til 10 p.m. last night. I was on hold with Disney."

He called Hurricane Matthew a rarity.
"At least the last five years, we've been very lucky with hurricanes," Bliss said. "We just haven't had them."
His tips are to not assume anything and buy trip insurance.

"That's one thing we do recommend for clients all the time but especially during hurricane season," Bliss said.

Rosebush didn't buy travel insurance and said she's lucky Disney has a hurricane policy.
"I've never gotten it in the past but I might think about it now," she said.
For now, she's still figuring out a new plan.
"They've cried a lot, but I said we'll do something," Bliss said. "I don't know what it's going to be. I don't know where it's going to be."
Both Rosebush and Bliss said the best strategy is to just relax.
"You have to be patient. I mean think about all the people who are affected by this," Bliss said.
"It is what it is," Rosebush said. "You can't be mad about the weather."
