St. Matthews Hardware to close
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - For the last 95 years, people have been shopping at St. Matthews Hardware. However, a sale of the property will bring demolition.
Independence Bank bought St. Matthews Hardware and Gross Diamonds next door to build a branch.
"Yeah we don't know when. I'm probably seeing the first of next year," St. Matthews Hardware owner Pete Hammer said.
Hammer has been the face of St. Matthews Hardware for more than two decades. Family is what got him in the business. His father started working at the store in 1940 and bought it in 1960. Hammer bought it from his father in 1980.
The sale is a tough pill to swallow for loyal customers.
"I don't know what I'm going to do," Beth Munzer said.
Munzer is 72 years old and grew up down the road from the store.
"My dad brought me here when I was a child," Munzer said.
Munzer's story is like so many others. The hardware store is near and dear to their hearts.
"They are the most wonderful people do deal with," Sam Ramazani said.
The disappointment from customers is the toughest part for Hammer.
"But it's time," Hammer said.
Hammer doesn't have an official closing date yet. He's hoping he'll be able to stay through the end of the year.
