LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A couple shared their unique love story, which overcame dark family secrets, Sunday night at Temple Shalom.
German journalist Uwe von Seltmann spent years trying to learn more about his grandfather only to discover that he was part of the SS - the group most directly responsible for the Holocaust.
His wife, Gabi, is Polish and didn't know much about her family history either.
"Very fast we started to talk and Uwe, as he is, started to ask questions," Gabi von Seltmann said. "And I could not say a lot because my grandfather was also a taboo subject in our family because of different reason."
They would discover that Gabi's grandfather was killed in the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz.
But they said discovering and dealing with that history helped their families overcome the lingering pain.
