CA woman charged with trying to import heroin through Louisville airport

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A California woman is accused of trying to import heroin through Louisville International Airport.

According to an arrest report, Celena Christina Smith, 23, of San Pedro, CA, was stopped at the airport on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 21 after a K9 alert on her luggage. Police said Smith consented to a search her luggage but refused to consent to a search of her purse. A police dog indicated the presence of a narcotics odor, the report states.

At this point, police said, Smith became verbally abusive and detectives noticed Smith pouring perfume into her purse to conceal the odor of the narcotics.

Upon searching her purse, detectives said they found about 20 brindles of suspected heroin, weighing an estimated 500 to 600 grams.

Smith was charged with importing heroin, aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence.

The arresting detective requested a high bond due to her being a flight risk. Bond was set at $50,000.

Federal charges are expected to follow.
