LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Nearly 3,000 meals were served to Louisville's homeless community on Thanksgiving Day.

Wayside Christian Mission hosted an all-day Thanksgiving celebration at Hotel Louisville downtown to feed thousands of people who wouldn't have a warm meal otherwise.

Hundreds of volunteers served breakfast, lunch and dinner.

"That is the only time they can feel like they're somebody," volunteer Titsa Howell said.

Howell has helped prepare Wayside's Thanksgiving feast for 31 years. Her grandchildren now join her, too.

They aren't the only young people with a soft spot for giving. Nearly a dozen students from Christian Academy Louisville and St. X High School also volunteered.

Molly Determann brings her daughter Ellie to volunteer every year.

"They beg me to come, and if I'm ever tired and think about not coming, they're like, 'I want to go,'" Determann said. "We've invited all of our friends. They love to come and serve."

While food and drinks are provided, live entertainment is available for guests, including dancing, live bands and karaoke.

Wayside Christian Mission serves food every day of the year. In fact, the group encourages volunteers to help serve meals as often as possible.
