LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville woman has been charged after her three young children were alone in the family's apartment.
Louisville Metro police were called to the 100 block of Caldwell St. around 1:30 a.m. Nov. 29. The call came from a neighbor who said a three-year-old knocked on her door and said, "momma left me." Officers found that child and the other two children, ages 21 months and eight months, in the apartment unattended.
While police were there, the children's mother, Mercedes Nicole Cannon, 25, returned to the apartment. Officers said Cannon told them she left the apartment at 11:09 p.m. and left the children unattended and the apartment door unlocked.
Cannon was arrested on three counts of abandonment of a minor and booked into Louisville Metro Corrections. She was scheduled to be arraigned today.
The children were placed into the custody of a relative.
