LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A police officer was hit in the knee by a car as it fled a traffic stop, leading officers on a pursuit from an area near Churchill Downs to Shively.

Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman Dwight Mitchell said LMPD Fourth Division officers stopped a suspected stolen vehicle on Taylor Boulevard near Beecher Street about 11:23 a.m. Thursday. During the traffic stop, officers confirmed the 2015 Chrysler 200 had been stolen in Indiana.

Mitchell said the driver of the car put the vehicle in gear and took off, striking one of the officers in the knee..

Police pursued the vehicle onto Interstate 264 and then Dixie Highway. The pursuit ended about 15 minutes later off Dixie at Matheis Lane in Shively.

The male driver and his female passenger were taken into custody. Both of them were transported to University of Louisville Hospital with minor injuries. Charges against them are pending.

The officer who was hit also was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
