LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's your chance to view Thunder Over Louisville in a whole new way. You can reserve your own gondola on the SkyStar Ferris Wheel during one of the largest annual fireworks shows in North America.
The SkyStar has been set up by the Big Four Bridge since March 29. It's a temporary addition to the Louisville waterfront and will be in place through May 6.
During the day of Thunder -- Saturday, April 21 -- the Ferris wheel will be open to the public for general admission.
That night during the fireworks, SkyStar is accepting reservations for its 36 gondolas. The price has been reduced to $599 from $1,000 per gondola. For that price, you get your own gondola, which fits six people, from 9 to 10 p.m. Each person will receive a t-shirt, photo package, and Pegasus Pin.
However, the VIP package no longer includes an open bar and concessions.
"The guy that is doing our concessions doesn't have a liquor license for the day of Thunder at Waterfront Park," Todd Schneider of SkyStar Observation Wheel said. "Someone has a blanket license for the whole park for that day for that event."
So the concessions that are normally by the Ferris wheel won't be there during Thunder. Still, plenty of options for food and drinks are nearby which you can bring on the ride. Beer is also available at the Chow Wagon at Waterfront Park, North Great Lawn, Meijer Family Fun Zone on the West Belvedere and Big Four Lawn.
"The fireworks are going to go from 9:30 to 10:00," Schneider said. "We'll get all the guests on and get everyone boarded and there is going to be plenty of food and beverage around us. You can bring drinks on."
Checking out the fireworks show 150 feet above the river is a different perspective -- one that has never been available before, and may not be available again.
Boarding will begin at 9 p.m. and the ride will end at 10 p.m. Children are allowed.
Ten of the gondolas have been sold for the Thunder fireworks show so far as of Tuesday afternoon, leaving 20 up for grabs. The Ferris wheel will be coordinating with the Thunder disco theme.
If you want to avoid the crowds, another great day to check out the Ferris wheel will be on Friday while the planes performing in the air show are out practicing.
