Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman Dwight Mitchell said officers found a woman dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as Ruth Perkins, 69, by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. She died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Monday night, LMPD confirmed they arrested Gavin Perkins, 39. He is charged with murder and domestic violence. Officers confirmed the suspect is the son of the victim.

Neighbors WAVE 3 News spoke to Monday afternoon were on edge.

A woman who said she lived next to Ruth described her as "beautiful" and "fun." That neighbor said she saw another person taken out of Ruth's condo on a stretcher.

Police have not discussed a motive for the shooting, but they believe it was an isolated incident.

One man discussed starting a neighborhood watch.

"I've got a camera on my door," Jeffrey MacIntosh said. "I'm just going to be alert. I'm going to be out walking more and see something, say something -- big time."

MacIntosh has lived in the building for 20 years. He said he used to feel safe, but has noticed a change.

"I've seen some weird characters just walk through here back and forth with a hood on," he said. "And I've taken pictures of it, and I've let the community know."

Perkins is being held in Louisville Metro Corrections. He is due in arraignment court on Tuesday morning.
