Man shot moments before officer-involved shooting in Buechel dies

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man who was shot moments before an officer-involved shooting in Buechel died.

Orestes Romaro Nieblas, 32, died from multiple gunshot wounds after he was shot near the intersection of Bardstown Road and Bashford Manor Lane on April 22, according to Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Steve Moran.

Nieblas was shot by Miguel Escalona Vivas, 37, according to police.

Officer Keith Walz responded to the scene after witnesses saw Vivas chasing Nieblas with a gun.

Hurstbourne Acres officer Gary Phelps was off duty and happened to be in the area. Both officers told Vivas to drop his gun but he refused and pointed it at the officers. That is when the officers fired at Vivas.

Vivas died from his injuries.

Walz is a two-year veteran and Phelps is a 25 year law enforcement veteran.

The shootings remain under investigation.
