JEFFERSONTOWN, KY (WAVE) – Authorities say a electrical outlet was the cause of a Saturday morning fire at a Jeffersontown apartment complex.

Firefighters were called to the Hampshire House Apartments in the 10100 block of Grand Avenue just after 11 a.m. by a resident who heard a popping sound from electrical outlet in her second-floor apartment. Moments later, she noticed flames and called 911.

According to Asst. Chief Tom Darst, Jeffersontown firefighters were on the scene in minutes and found fire in the apartment with heavy smoke in the hallway. Darst said a space heater was plugged into the outlet at the time it caught fire.

The residents of the three floor building were evacuated. No one was injured and the fire was contained to the one unit.

As colder weather sets in, Darst said that people using space heaters should make sure they are UL rated and designed to shut off when tipped over. He also said that cords should not be run under rugs or outlets overloaded. Darst said there none of those were a factor in this fire.
