JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - Southern Indiana's 9th District Congressman Todd Young has returned from his first few weeks in Washington. The Republican says his first priority is keeping the campaign promises he made, including cutting spending and tax reform.

Repealing the president's health care plan or at least making major changes to it is also a priority for Young. He claims the plan will send costs skyrocketing while limiting choices.

"It's common sense," said Young, "that when you start covering 30 million more Americans it's going to end up costing your economy more money unless your focus is on squeezing more value out of our healthcare system and bringing down the cost of health insurance. That's not the approach they took."

Young says cost cutting starts in his office.

"We've cut our own staff budgets," Young said. "I'm sleeping on the couch, at least for the time being, because I know times are tough and it's important we lead by example."

Young has been visiting constituents in towns such as Jasper, New Albany, Lawrenceburg and Madison, Indiana. He knows his district's citizens want spending tamed and priorities set on Capitol Hill.

"I will be a very active voice for that effort," said Young, "especially as a member of the Budget Committee. You'll see a lot of spending decisions made that weren't made in years past."

When it comes to creating jobs, Young will push for tax reform and cuts.

"We will also take a look at our corporate tax rate, which is one of the highest in the industrialized world and makes us a less attractive place to do business internationally," Young said. "That kills jobs and we need to bring it down."
