Northbound lanes of I-71 reopen early

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced Thursday that the northbound lanes of Interstate 71 heading out of downtown Louisville have opened ahead of schedule. Shortly after the noon hour traffic was flowing in both northbound lanes, almost two days earlier than the May 26 deadline.
Andrea Clifford, spokesperson for the KYTC, said good weather allowed crews to finishing their work ahead of schedule and no construction work would take place over the Memorial Day weekend.
Evening lane closures are still possible on southbound I-71 Thursday night into Friday morning May 25 due to installation of guardrails. Similar lane closures will be possible after the holiday weekend beginning Tuesday, May 29 on both north and southbound lanes for additional draining structure repairs and shoulder work.
From Friday, June 1 at 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday, June 4 both northbound lanes of I-71 will be closed beginning for the final paving of that side of the interstate. During that closure period traffic heading from the downtown area that would normally use I-71 will be diverted onto eastbound I-64 and eastbound I-264.
