Fire damages apartment complex in New Albany

NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - The freezing temperatures made it difficult for fire crews in New Albany to put out a blaze that destroyed 12 apartments.

The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. at Cedar Ridge Apartments on Grant Line Road. Flames had already spread to the attic and were shooting through the roof of the apartments when fire crews arrived.

The residents of all 12 units were able to get out safely. Karry Doubler said she was getting ready for work when smoke started rolling through the apartment. Doubler grabbed her 4 1/2 year old daughter and ran from her apartment.

"She was very scared," said Doubler. "We weren't even dressed. We got dressed in the street and people started giving us clothes and stuff because I was getting ready for work we weren't even dressed."

It took a lot of work for firefighters to put the fire out, but not just because it was so large. The minute they sprayed water on the building it turned into ice.

Managers of Cedar Ridge Apartments have opened an empty building with heat for Doubler and the other displaced residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
