Man dead, pregnant woman injured in double shooting at downtown apartment complex

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – One man is dead and a pregnant woman had an emergency c-section after a double shooting in an apartment complex in downtown Louisville, according to police.

At a press conference, police confirmed that mother and baby are doing well and expected to survive. The woman was shot twice in the abdomen and seems to have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. She didn't live in the complex and didn't know the man who was killed.

The shooting was reported at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday in Building A of Dosker Manor Resident Corporation, located at 413 East Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

Louisville Metro Police Department spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said both of the victims were shot on the 12th floor of the complex.

Gene Horsely described what he heard coming from a neighboring apartment, "Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop."

Residents scrambled out of their apartments after the heard shots, then sirens. "I heard eight shots, I was counting them, and I thought 'what?' And I opened up my balcony door and I said, I heard a scream," another resident, Patricia York, said.

Police surrounded complex as the crowd got bigger, everyone looking up toward the 12th floor where police where pulling up yellow tape. Officers searched the other floors. Police said the shooting happened in the elevator.

WAVE 3 News was there as the ambulances loaded up. Police rushed by our cameras following the ambulances to University of Louisville hospital. That's where police said a man in his late 20s or early 30s was pronounced dead. Police said he was a resident of the complex and was confined to a wheelchair. A pregnant woman in her mid 20's underwent surgery. As of Tuesday night police said she was listed in serious condition.

"I feel bad for whoever it happened to and I hope they survive, but, uh, it's just terrible," Horsley said.

No other injuries were reported. Police are not naming any suspects in the shooting, but are asking anyone with information to call the anonymous tip line at (502) 574-LMPD.
