FERN CREEK, KY (WAVE) - For the second time in a little more than a month, fire crews fought flames at the Park at Hurstbourne apartment complex.

"There was just everything up in smoke," said Donald Reker, who lives across from the townhomes. "I mean tons and tons just rolling everywhere."

Two departments joined the mutual aid effort after Fern Creek firefighters arrived on scene just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to Chief Mike Schmidt.

"We had about eight companies, 30 guys working it," Schmidt said.

A vacant unit suffered the worst damage. The residents next door weren't home, Schmidt said.

"Preliminary tells us it could be in a fireplace. Maybe a dryer connection or vent," Schmidt said. "They (the two townhomes) share a common wall. The fireplaces butt up against each other. All their utilities butt up against each other. So they're still investigating which unit this actually started in."

A fire in the same complex on Jan. 14 displaced almost 60 people. Investigators had to shut off utilities to a number of apartments. Since then, crews have been working on replacing electrical boxes in a number of units.

Wednesday's temperatures in the teens posed more discomfort than danger, said Schmidt.

"The wind is what we're worried about over the next several days. It affects us. It affects our equipment. And gusts can make a fire jump."

No injuries were reported. The Louisville Metro Arson Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
