A new law will soon make it legal to own, sell and even make short-barreled shotguns.

Such shotguns will be legal beginning on July 1.

It's currently a felony to have one in Indiana.

There are some restrictions for those interested in getting the guns.

"After July 1, you can possess the sawed-off shotgun, but you have to have the permits and register it accordingly," Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt said.

Added Joshua Hann, who works at Carson Firearms and Archery: "You pay a $200 tax stamp on it, and, to my knowledge, the way it works is it takes six to nine months for the paperwork and background to go through to even possess that firearm."

The new law will include a measure that requires a 10-year sentence for certain crimes committed with a sawed-off shotgun.
