Apartment catches fire in St. Matthews

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – One person was taken to an area hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after an apartment caught fire in Saint Matthews.
The fire was reported in the 3800 block of Nanz Avenue around 4:40 p.m. Friday.

When fire crews arrived on the scene they reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the building.
St. Matthews Fire Department spokesman Rick Tonini said the man who lived in the unit had ammunition stored inside that was set off by the fire.
St. Matthews Fire Department, Harrods Creek Fire Department, Lyndon Fire Department, McMahan Fire Department, Louisville Metro and Louisville Metro EMS crews responded to the fire and were able to put out the flames within four minutes.
A preliminary investigation showed the fire started when a resident fell asleep while cooking, but the official cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Tonini said the unit where the fire started was heavily damaged, neighboring units sustained smoke and water damage No other injuries were reported.
